Top 10 Nollywood Movies in 2022

So far, 2022 has been an interesting year, and the Nollywood industry is an evidence of this.  

Many filmmakers have been at the top of their game courtesy of platforms like Netnaija Nollywood movies, Netflix, etc. There have been a lot of movie releases in the latest Nollywood movies category.

And in this article, I present a list of my top Nollywood movies in 2022 in no particular order. 

Top Nollywood Movies in 2022

1. Selina

Akingbola Olubunmi directed this Nollywood movie produced in 2022. It featured stars like Daniel Etim Effiong and Bimbo Ademoye as the lead characters.

The movie talks about Selina, who was a local cook and had dreams of opening her restaurant yet doesn’t have the funds, as well as seeing her younger brother through school.

In her quest to pursue her dreams, she became a cook in Reuben’s house to pay for her outstanding debt and cater to her younger brother. 

The 2022 comedy movie is a must-watch as it features love, determination, and hard work. It should be among the list of the top Nollywood movies in 2022.

2. Blood sisters

Blood sisters is unarguably one of the top Nollywood movies in 2022. It was released on the 5th of May 2022 and featured top actors like Ini-Dima Okojie, Nancy Isime, Ramsey Nouah, Kate Henshaw, Uche Jumbo, Kehinde Bankole, Daniel Etim Effiong, Deyemi Okanlawon.

The movie tells the story of two ladies who were the best of friends from different ethnic groups and who became fugitives after murdering Kola (Sarah’s fiance) at their engagement party.

This tops the list of my best Nigerian Movies and is a must-watch as it speaks of friendship, love, and crime.

3. Glamour girls

This 2022 movie is a remake of the 1994 glamour Girls movie. It speaks about a group of ladies living an extravagant lifestyle as high-end escorts, irrespective of their status or what society thinks.

The movie featured stars like Sharon Ooja, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Joselyn Dumas, Toke Makinwa, Uzor Arukwe, Femi Branch, Ejike Asiegbu, and more. The movie is one of the best Nigerian Movies in 2022.

4. Man of God

This Latest Nollywood movie plots around a man forsaking his religious background and discipline to pursue his ambition and is one of the top Nollywood movies in 2022. 

The movie talks about the struggles in the Christian faith, life as clergy, and living as a clergy child with high hopes being placed on such people by church members. This Nigerian movie provides an avenue for self-reflection, family life, religious beliefs, and crimes.

Cast include; Akah Nnanni, Osas Ighodaro, Dorcas Shola Fapson, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, Mawuli Gavor, and others.

5. Amina

Amina is based on a true-life story. Here, it’s the story of 16th-century Zazzau. Zazzau is a settlement in Nigeria, which is the modern-day Zaria.

In this movie, Amina uses her military skills and tactics to defend her family’s kingdom. It is a movie you should watch if you have not done so, as it is a top Nollywood movie in 2022.

It featured popular actors like Ali Nuhu, and Lucy Ameh, and was directed by Izu Ojukwu.

6. Fine wine

Richard Mofe-Damijo played the role of a wealthy, lonely man who fell for a woman much younger than him. He’s then left to confront the social stigma around age-gap romances.

Fine Wine, a Nollywood movie, was released in 2021 and was directed by Seyi Babatope. Cast members include Ego Nwosu, Ademola Adedoyin, Zainab Balogun, and so on. This is one of the most interesting Netnaija Nollywood movies.

7. Swallow

Swallow was adapted from a novel by a prize-winning Nigerian author – Sefi Atta. Some cast members include Eniola ‘Niyola’ Akinbo, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Dayemi Okanlawon, and so on. 

If you like novels and want to see them in movies, this is for you. The movie was released in October 2021 by Netflix but it is still a trending movie in 2022.

8. Anikulapo

Anikulapo is one of the Nollywood movies of 2022 that Kunle Afolayan produced, and Netflix released September 30, 2022. The movie was about a young man who got the gift of bringing people back to life; however, he was overcome by greed and his love for women, which led to his untimely death.

This Nollywood movie starred Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, and Taiwo Hassan. It arguably stands as one of the best Nigerian movies. The producer, Afolayan portrayed Yoruba culture, and it was filmed in Oyo State.

9. The man for the job

One of the intriguing Nollywood movies of 2022 is a Niyi Akinmolayan classic which came to us this year. This year Anthill productions put in the work with this film, and it showed in their box office numbers. It counts as one of the top Nollywood movies in 2022.

The film’s plot surrounds cybercrime. Joseph’s random act of help towards a Fintech conflict coincides with a scam in that company, and he is faced with a dilemma between jeopardizing his future or being loyal to his friend.  

This movie makes the list of the Latest Nollywood movies in 2022, and it tops the list of best Nollywood movies in 2022. It’s a must-watch in case you haven’t already.

10. Baby maker 

The last but not the least top Nollywood movie of 2022 is Babymaker. It has its plot around friendship, which becomes sour after Nasa decides to have a child with her best friend, Mofe.

 After recovering from a myomectomy, Nasa is advised by her doctor to conceive in time to avoid complications in the future. After a failed IVF procedure with her best friend Mofe, she decides to conceive naturally with him. A mix of feelings stirs up and starts to rock their tight-knit friendship. 

The film was written by Adaora Udeh and directed by Orimz, and it also features Kunle Remi, Adaora Udeh, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Alvan Udeh. Information on the exact release date is still unavailable.

Conclusion

In 2022, the Nollywood industry did an insightful job with what they offered us this year. Some of the best Nigerian movies released have greatly changed the minds of people who have already written the entire industry off because of certain films. 

These Nollywood movies have proven to us that one film doesn’t always represent the entirety of the industry. This is the year of the underdogs, the indie filmmakers who are telling untold stories.
