pros and cons of 5G technology

It is no more news that 5G Technology is already here in Nigeria, with MTN pioneering the innovation and making it available in some selected places. We have had 3G, 4G, and even the earlier 2G and Just E for internet access. So what is 5G technology all about?

The fifth generation of mobile network technology, known as 5G, uses the same radio frequencies as our cell phones to operate.

However, this unique technology has dramatically enhanced network connectivity, opening up new possibilities for even more creative solutions. Connected sensors and automated manufacturing lines responding to supply and demand are just two examples of how 5G Technology accelerates innovation and improves user experiences.

It is gradually displacing 4G networks, which meet the needs of smartphone users for data access, in many regions of the world.

The network enables developers to release apps more quickly, in addition to helping individuals. Enterprises will profit the most from this new cellular standard, even while carriers continue to focus on individuals with their 5G service.

However, faster wireless access won’t be free. Many companies will need to upgrade their infrastructure to benefit from 5G’s capabilities.

How 5g Technology Came Into Existence

The days of using 1GB of data for the whole month while playing Snake on our Nokia are long gone. Instead, several generations of data technology have emerged throughout the years as a result of the advancement of technology.

From the essential internet services of 2G to the video and streaming capabilities of 3G, and more recently, the higher speeds and online gaming capabilities of 4G LTE, there has been a steady progression toward 5G, which is expected to alter how we work, live, and play fundamentally.

Network operators rolled out limited 5G availability in 2020 as it enters its initial deployment phase and is targeting larger availability by the end of 2022. By 2024, there should be 1.9 million 5G subscribers worldwide, according to projections.

Business leaders need to keep in mind that the network is still developing. Although there are many benefits, there are also some drawbacks as they look ahead to the innovation potential that 5G Technology will provide. In this post, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of 5G Technology.

The pros of 5G technology.

  1. It has a very high network speed.

In comparison to 4G and 4G LTE, 5G operates more quickly on mobile phones and other devices. Instead of taking minutes, it enables customers to download movies, videos, and music in seconds.

In addition, organizations utilize the network’s 20 Gbps speed for services like automation, enhanced web conferencing, etc. According to a recent poll, customers who use 5G downloaded content in less than 23 hours per day.

  1. It has very little latency.

The length of time between an action and a reaction is known as latency. For instance, the amount of time it takes for a browser to display a webpage once a user clicks a link to one. The latency of 5G networks will be much lower than that of 4G LTE networks. It may be less than five milliseconds, according to one test.

New applications like the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence will be able to operate in real-time due to the decreased latency.

Additionally, it makes it simple for mobile phone users to browse the web and open websites. Another benefit is that it provides means to access the internet whenever you need to get some crucial information.

  1. It has more capacity.

Up to 100 times more capacity than 4G is possible with 5G. It enables businesses to transition between cellular and Wi-Fi wireless solutions, greatly enhancing performance.

In addition, it offers very effective ways to access the internet. It will be able to link thousands of internet-enabled devices, including phones, sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and manage many high-demand applications running concurrently (Internet of Things).

Additionally, it allows field-based staff to use Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity when travelling between the office and remote sites without sacrificing performance or internet access.

  1. It has greater bandwidth.

Greater versatility and the capacity to achieve much more in a shorter amount of time are implied by increased bandwidth. This enables faster connections as well as more devices, which suggests that more people may connect to the internet inside a certain network.

One of the key benefits of 5G Technology is that it improves bandwidth, which will aid in quick data transfer. Additionally, by selecting a 5G network, mobile phone customers may get a quicker connection with greater capacity. However, business leaders need to remember that the network is still developing, although there are many benefits.

  1. It will give birth to more powerful innovations.

Connecting with a wide variety of devices, such as drones and sensors, requires the use of 5G technology. It offers strategies for accelerating IoT adoption, enabling businesses to increase productivity and accomplish other things.

5G’s low latency and high capacity make it ideal for linking a broad variety of devices, or “things,” such as drones and sensors in a product or machine, whereas 4G was primarily focused on mobile phones.

As a result, there will be substantial technological improvements in the healthcare industry as well as in retail, manufacturing, and entertainment.

The Cons of 5G Technology

  1. It does not provide full security.

Although the transport security algorithms in 5G Technology are more comprehensive than those in the 4G standard, corporations may face additional cybersecurity challenges. The sheer number of IoT devices and components combined with 5G networks will significantly increase the company’s vulnerability to risks as attackers seek to exploit vulnerabilities.

The 5G devices themselves could be a source of concern, as the processors and other components used to power them could be infiltrated with malware by nation-state actors. Enterprises must also carefully balance the use of network slicing — creating a virtual network to transport a specific application or service — with their 5G networks.

5G management software is vulnerable to attacks; a breach in any part of the carrier’s or enterprise’s infrastructure could cause major security concerns across the network.

  1. Its coverage is limited globally.

The biggest drawback of 5G is that it only has local availability and has patchy worldwide coverage. As a result, only urban regions will see significant benefits from the 5G network, while rural areas may not see coverage for several years. Furthermore, the costs associated with installing tower stations are significant compared to other networks.

Although 5G technology is supposed to be the fastest, one of its limitations is that it is now only available in a restricted number of sites throughout the world that have 5G towers. Although worldwide firms and governments are working to guarantee that all cities have 5G coverage, the introduction and implementation of 5G will take years since testing, trialing, and installing 5G towers is expensive.

  1. The broadcast distance is shortened.

Although 5G operates quickly at high speeds, it won’t have the same range as 4G. Additionally, large structures and trees may obstruct the frequency of the 5G network, which will cause a number of issues.

Therefore, it requires additional towers for coverage, which is time-consuming and expensive. Rain can also interfere with 5G coverage, which requires additional shielding.

  1. It weakens device batteries.

A 5G connection on the phone will cause a significant power drain, greatly reducing battery life. Therefore, in order to safeguard the battery from harm and other issues, producers must invest in innovative battery technologies.

While attempts are being made to develop 5G devices, experts claim the technology is proving to be an issue for 4G smartphones due to battery deterioration.

Conclusion

The advantages and disadvantages of 5G technology can leave one to a very tough decision of saying whether it is what we will really want or whether we should keep up with our 4G technology.

Nevertheless, it is also a fact that there is no technological advancement that will not have an effect on the ecosystem, directly or indirectly; the best we can do is to manage the effect so as to keep it minimal and get the benefit of such innovation, and 5G technology is not an exception.
