Bonny Island is located at the southern boundary of Rivers state, near Port Harcourt in Nigeria. The British named the Island “Bonny” because it is situated at the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean on the Bight of Bonny.

A Brief History of the Bonny Island of Rivers State

Bonny Island surely is full of incredible history. Its history makes the island the hotbed of tourism that it is today. The town which is now home to the Bonny LNG plant was founded by a traditional priest about 1000 AD. 

The priest, Ndoli, was believed to hail from Ebeni in present-day Bayelsa state.  At that time, the Island was called “Ubani” or “Okoloama.” Many of the locals still call the island by these names.

In the 15th century, the island became a main port on the Slave Coast. Millions of people were sold into slavery through the Bonny Island port. This continued till the 19th century when the slave trade was abolished. The port was then used for the exportation of palm oil products and ivory.

Presently, Bonny Island of Rivers State is the core of the oil business in Nigeria. It is home to the Bonny LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) plant owned by Nigeria and three other shareholders.  Today, the island has become a source of pride and confidence in the hearts of Nigerians.

This beautiful park is a freshwater swamp forest lying along Nigeria’s southern coastal area. The park exhibits a vast gallery of flora and fauna. It’s a serene environment which inspires relaxation and peace. 

If you’re a fan of nature, Finima Nature Park is perfect for you. Imagine seating under tree canopies surrounded by flowers. Picture listening to the soothing sounds of the wind and singing birds. Doesn’t that sound heavenly?

• Finima beach

Moreover, this particular beach is a major attraction because it houses most of the oil companies on the Island. Thus, get your favourite swimsuit ready and enjoy the warm sand beneath your feet while touring around the beach.

• Bonny love garden

This garden is a constant favourite for everyone; both young and old. This picturesque haven has one of the best beach views on the whole island. It is also a mini resort. So you could stay there and wake up to a beautiful view every morning. 

Evenings are the best times in the garden. You’ll come across various entertainments and the delicious scents of roasting barbecues, shawarma and other tasty snacks.

• Traditional festivals

Two major festivals take place annually on the island. The Opobo Regatta festival and the Nwaotam masquerade festival. These festivals take place during the Christmas season and it is a major holiday attraction. 

It gives you an insight into the traditions of the island. The Opobo Regatta festival features a boat racing contest which is the highlight of the festival. There will also be masquerades dressed in different colours, good food and traditional music.  That’s a lot of fun you do not want to miss.

• Historical museum
