The priest, Ndoli, was believed to hail from Ebeni in present-day Bayelsa state. At that time, the Island was called “Ubani” or “Okoloama.” Many of the locals still call the island by these names.
In the 15th century, the island became a main port on the Slave Coast. Millions of people were sold into slavery through the Bonny Island port. This continued till the 19th century when the slave trade was abolished. The port was then used for the exportation of palm oil products and ivory.
Presently, Bonny Island of Rivers State is the core of the oil business in Nigeria. It is home to the Bonny LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) plant owned by Nigeria and three other shareholders. Today, the island has become a source of pride and confidence in the hearts of Nigerians.
