Communication tips

We all know that effective communication is the heartbeat of a successful relationship. But what does “effective communication” really mean to you as a married woman? Well, it’s more than just talking; it’s about truly connecting with your husband.

Marriage is a beautiful journey filled with love, joy, and companionship. But like any journey, there will be bumps along the way. Effective communication is the compass that guides a successful marriage. As Nigerian women, we face unique challenges and cultural dynamics that can affect how we communicate with our spouses.

In this article, we’re going to explore eleven (11) effective communication tips tailored to our Nigerian context, number seven (7) is my favorite.

Understanding Cultural Dynamics

First things first, we must acknowledge the colorful tapestry of Nigerian culture that shapes our marriages. We’re not just married to our partners; we’re married into families, communities, and traditions. Sometimes, these cultural factors influence how we communicate. It’s essential to navigate this terrain with grace.

Remember, communication is not just about words; it’s also about understanding the context and emotions behind them.

What is Effective Communication?

Before we dive into the tips, let’s briefly talk about what effective communication is. In simple terms, it is how you express your thoughts, feelings, and needs to your partner in a way that they understand, and vice versa. It’s like speaking in their love language, with respect, and understanding.

Effective communication is the key to a happy and lasting marriage. In a Nigerian marriage, it’s like the secret recipe that makes jollof rice finger-licking good.

Barriers to Effective Communication

Now, let’s address the roadblocks that can hinder effective communication. These barriers can sneak into our marriages and create misunderstandings. As a Nigerian woman, we’ve got to be aware of them to break them down.

  1. Assumptions

We often assume our partner knows what we’re thinking. Trust me, they don’t. Don’t be afraid to speak up.

  1. Lack of time

Our busy Nigerian lives can make us neglect communication. Make time for your spouse; it’s essential.

  1. Emotional baggage

Past hurts and unresolved issues can cloud our current communication. Deal with them to move forward.

  1. Distractions

From Nollywood to Zee world, distractions are everywhere. To communicate effectively with your partner, find quality time without  any of these distractions.

Effective Communication Tips for Married Women

Now, let’s get into the juicy part—eleven (11) effective communication tips for Nigerian married women.

  1. Active listening

Effective communication starts with listening. Active listening means giving your partner full attention when they are speaking. Put away your phone, turn off the TV, and focus on what they’re saying. Show empathy and understanding by nodding, making eye contact, and asking questions to clarify their thoughts.

By practising active listening, you can create a safe and open environment for your husband to express himself.

  1. Use ‘I’ statements

Instead of saying, “You never help with the chores”, try, “I feel overwhelmed when I have to do all the chores alone.” ‘I’ statements express your feelings without blaming your spouse. It’s a recipe for a less defensive response.

  1. Timing matters

Consider choosing the right time and place for important conversations. Avoid discussing sensitive topics when you’re both tired, angry or stressed. A quiet moment after dinner can be an excellent time to chat.

  1. Be patient

Effective communication isn’t a one-time thing. It takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself and your husband as you work on it together. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is perfect communication.

  1. Non-verbal communication

It was Albert Mehrabian, a researcher of body language, who first broke down the components of a face-to-face conversation. He found that communication is 55% nonverbal, 38% vocal, and 7% words only. The conclusion was that 93 percent of communication is “nonverbal” in nature.

Pay attention to non-verbal cues. Sometimes, a smile, a hug, or a touch can convey more than words. And remember, rolling your eyes can speak volumes too, so be mindful of your body language.

  1. Avoid interrupting

It can be tempting to jump in when your husband is talking, especially if you disagree. But wait for him to finish before sharing your thoughts. It’s like taking turns on a danfo ride; it keeps things smooth.

  1. Validate feelings

Acknowledge your husband’s feelings even if you don’t agree with his perspective. Saying, “I understand that you feel that way” shows empathy and respect.

  1. Use humor wisely

Laughter is a great way to bond, but be careful with humor, especially in sensitive discussions. What’s funny to you might not be funny to your spouse, so tread lightly.

  1. Ask for feedback

Don’t hesitate to ask your spouse for feedback on your communication. It shows your commitment to improving. Ask questions like, “How can we communicate better?” or “Is there anything I can do differently?”

  1. Seek help if needed

If you find that communication is consistently challenging in your marriage, don’t be afraid to seek help. A counselor or therapist can provide guidance and tools to enhance your communication.

  1. Use technology wisely

In today’s digital age, technology has become a significant part of our lives, including our marriages. While it can help us stay connected, it can also pose challenges. Find a balance between online and offline interactions with your husband.

Make time for face-to-face conversations without distractions, and consider setting boundaries for phone and social media use. Remember that the quality of your time together matters more than the quantity.
